English Writing 1111 is designed for students to practice writing in a workshop setting. We read a range of texts in order to understand and evaluate choices that writers make, and we apply this knowledge to our own writing. Students examine how writing functions in varying contexts and genres. We learn how to conduct research; how to write for various audiences; how to give and receive feedback; and how to revise our own writing over time.

In this section of First-Year Writing, we will treat writing as a public form of communication. In your future industries and professions, your ability to comprehend complex concepts and to explain them to others will be valued highly. To cultivate this skill set, most of our writing will take place on a public blog, where we will frame ideas for readers beyond the classroom: peers, colleagues, and the general public.

As writers in the public sphere, we will investigate the concept of community. Surrounding each of us are diverse communities that impact how we experience the world. Often, our identities are shaped by the communities that we work actively to be part of, whether these groups manifest in real life or online. These groups may be united around collective interests, activities, and values, such as shared hobbies, religions, cultures, music, art, recreation, and academic or professional study. In this course, you will have the opportunity to explore a chosen community and engage with its current conversations.
