Opposition Op-Ed: Manchester United

In recent discussions of Manchester United, a controversial issue has been whether the current coach, Ole Solskjaer, should be replaced. On the one hand, some argue that he should not be replaced. From this perspective, Ole has had a limited tenure to prove what he can bring as a coach; however, despite some recent failures, he led the team to a 14 game unbeaten streak at the end of last season. On the other hand, however, others argue that he has been an underwhelming coach and should not be given more time to prove himself. In the words of Chris Burton, one of this view’s main proponents, “United would be making a wise decision in replacing Solskjaer with a proven coach at the very highest level.” According to this view, Ole should be replaced by a coach with experience and proven success. In sum, then, the issue is whether to keep or get rid of Ole.

My own view is that Manchester United's future success hinges on getting a new coach. Though I concede that Ole has had streaks of success as the coach, I still maintain that the only way to get the team back on track is to get a new head coach. Although some might object that Ole should have more time to prove himself, I would reply that he has had nearly 100 games to produce results. The issue is important because the club under Ole’s control has failed to win and compete against the best teams.

Since Ole became the coach in December 2018, the team has accrued just 36 wins in 84 matches, according to the Premier League website, making it evident that there needs to be a change. The quickest fix for Manchester United would be to acquire an experienced coach to replace Ole. Former player Jamie O’hara believes that former spurs manager, Pochettino, “would take Man Utd to another dimension.” Pochettino was commonly regarded as one of the best coaches, leading spurs to a Champions League final in 2018. He is a highly respected coach with plenty of prior experience to help put Manchester United back on track. Not only has Ole been unsuccessful, but a football365 writer claimed he was the worst coach in the Premier League: “Would Solskjaer get the manager’s job at any other “Big Six” club? Better yet, would any club in the Premier League give up their current manager for Solskjaer? No. That can’t be right when you are manager of Manchester United!” Manchester United has had limited success in the past few years despite having one of the most talented and expensive teams in the world. An experienced coach is the main solution to Manchester United’s problems.
