Opposition Op-ed: Technology advancement cannot promote creation of high-quality songs

As technology is rapidly developing, it has had more and more influence on the production of music. In the past, composers had to first write down every note on a piece of sheet, and then find a band to perform live and record it, which was time-consuming and laborious. However, with the advent of various music arranging software, a song can be simply created on a computer. Many people think that this simpler and more affordable music production process allows more high-quality music to be produced. As stated in the op-ed "How technology affects music and musicians": "This ease of creating and recording music has enable many of the aspiring, young and new musicians to enter the industry. Thus, it makes the industry more competitive and Versatile”, it seems that with these technologies, the future of music will reach a new level. However, these arranging resources that can be easily accessed may not in fact be able to promote creation of high quality songs.

The convenience of computer arranging makes composers more likely to over-rely on the arranging software, which will make the music they created lose part of its creativity. The advancement of technology has weakened the composer's three-dimensional independent perception of harmony. Because of the high-end composition software, every note can be heard again and again in it, and every harmony can be carried out without a live band, which is undoubtedly convenient and less costly. But the composer's ability to think independently is indeed weakened. When there is no composing software, every harmony and overall sound effect are constantly practiced in the composer’s mind and experimentation using instruments, which is very helpful for cultivating independent composing thinking. Without this kind of compositional thinking, the songs made are more likely to lose their overall aesthetic. At the same time, various fancy sound effects and instrument resources in the arranging software will also make some composers lost. They may be thinking more about how to use the fancy sound effects and superimposed instrument sounds to catch the listeners, instead of using exquisite chords and harmony to convey genuine emotions in the song, so that the song loses its own charm. In addition, the overuse of auto tune in some songs makes those songs lose their humanity. It is the subtle inaccuracies in the original human voice that make it sound more natural and make it easier for the listeners to feel the emotion in the song. But auto tune eliminates these things, making a song unnatural and less touching. Not only auto tune, the excessive use of electronic voice in many songs also makes them harder for listeners to relate.
