The musical life

For my community, I will be focusing on the community of residents at Kerr Hall, here at Northeastern. Kerr hall is home to the Music LLC, or learning living community, and I am super grateful to be able to be a part of it. The vast majority of residents here, myself included, have some sort of a connection to music, and through this blog I want to delve deeper into this shared passion.

My personal connection to music is rooted mostly in my dad, who’s been a musician for most of his life, playing guitar, violin and piano, and has been in a couple small bands throughout his time. Only recently did I decide to follow in his footsteps and teach myself guitar, and I’ve only wished I had done so sooner. Through my ability to play, I feel like I’ve discovered more of my own sense of self, as until now I never felt like I had a true creative outlet. I feel like beginning to play guitar is a step closer to becoming who I am, and that can only grow as I get better and improve other skills, such as singing and songwriting.

The people in my dorm have greatly inspired me as well, as it’s fascinating to meet people who do what I do but are greatly better. It’s neat to get to know people who you may not have gotten the opportunity to get to know, but given the shared love of music, paths were allowed to cross.

Kerr Hall’s culture means a lot to me because before I came to college, I was afraid I wouldn’t make tons of friends super easily, but thanks to our small size and shared connection to music, I feel like the culture we have is super unique and special. Everyone essentially knows everyone, and it’s not uncommon to see large groups from our dorm hanging outside in front, with a guitar or two or three, and many voices joined together in song. Through research and a little journalism, I hope to share the experience of life in the Music LLC with the broader world, and I couldn’t be more excited to do so.
